Welcome Address

  • Dear colleagues,

The second SPE Arctic and Extreme Environments Conference and Exhibition will take place in Moscow on 15-17 October 2013. This years’ theme is “Science and Industry Collaboration for Crossing Arctic Frontiers”.

The first event, in 2011, was very well received and featured over 60 papers across 10 technical and three plenary sessions. The papers covered a wide range of issues associated with fields in the Arctic and extreme environments including: innovations, investments, environmental protection and business social responsibility.

In recent years, the development of fields in the Arctic and extreme environments has become one of Russia’s priorities. Development of such fields in these harsh onshore and offshore conditions is extremely challenging for a number of reasons and which require innovative technical solutions as well as additional political decisions such as:

    • • Maximising environmental and industrial safety methods of current and planned projects
      • Minimising environmental risks
      • Prevention of technogenic catastrophes and preservation of the ecosystem
      • Development of new and adapted technologies for cost-effective production
      • Definition of proper acquisition and prospectivity evaluation
      • Clear legislation of new standards to be implemented
      • Enhancing education systems and focused professional training

With this in mind, discussing the latest technologies and technical issues related to operations in these environments where only excellence is acceptable, is vital. Subsequently, the 2013 programme committee would like to invite you to submit your paper proposals for the SPE Arctic and Extreme Environments Conference. We welcome industry leaders from around the world, representatives from service companies, international R&D institutions and universities, to share their experiences with us and to participate in solving one of the most important issues that our industry is facing.

We are looking forward to meeting you during this recognised international event.
